Salmon & Trout Fishing on Credit River

Get ready for an awesome afternoon of fishing on the Credit River! This half-day trip is perfect for anyone looking to catch some salmon and steelhead without having to spend a full day on the water. Whether you're a seasoned angler or just getting started, our expert guides will make sure you have a great time and hopefully land some nice fish. We'll be walking and wading along the river, hitting up some prime spots that most folks don't know about. It's a beautiful stretch of water and a great way to spend an afternoon outdoors.

What to Expect on the Water

Our afternoon trips kick off right after lunch, usually around 1 PM. We'll meet you at the river access point and get you geared up with waders, rods, and everything else you'll need. The Credit River is known for its crystal-clear water, which makes for some exciting sight fishing opportunities. We'll spend about 4 hours moving between different pools and runs, targeting salmon and steelhead. The walking is pretty easy-going, but you'll want to be comfortable on your feet for a few hours. Our guides know this river like the back of their hand, so they'll put you on fish and help you refine your technique. It's a hands-on experience where you'll learn a ton and hopefully hook into some nice fish.

Fishing Techniques & Gear

On this trip, we mainly use fly fishing techniques, but we can also set you up with spinning gear if that's more your style. For fly fishing, we typically use 9-foot 8-weight rods with floating lines for most situations. Depending on water levels and time of year, we might switch to sink tips or even full sinking lines. The Credit River is perfect for swinging flies for steelhead or drifting egg patterns and nymphs for both salmon and trout. If you're spin fishing, we'll use medium-action rods with 10-12 lb test line, tossing spoons, spinners, or drifting bait. Don't worry if you're new to these techniques - our guides are great teachers and will have you casting like a pro in no time.

Species You'll Want to Hook

The Credit River is home to some fantastic fish, and on this trip, we're mainly targeting three species: Chinook Salmon, Coho Salmon, and Steelhead Trout. Let's break down what you can expect from each:

Chinook Salmon, also known as King Salmon, are the biggest salmon you'll find in the Credit. These bruisers can weigh up to 30 pounds or more, and they put up an incredible fight. They start running up the river in late summer and early fall, with peak fishing usually in September and October. Hooking into a Chinook is like trying to stop a freight train - they'll peel line off your reel and give you a serious workout.

Coho Salmon are a bit smaller than Chinooks, usually in the 5-15 pound range, but what they lack in size they make up for in acrobatics. These fish are known for their spectacular leaps and runs when hooked. Cohos typically show up in the Credit River a little later than Chinooks, with the best fishing often in October and November. They're aggressive and will readily take flies or lures, making for some exciting action.

Steelhead Trout are the river's year-round residents and the favorite target for many local anglers. These sea-run rainbow trout range from 5-15 pounds and are some of the hardest fighting fish pound-for-pound you'll ever encounter. We get good runs of steelhead in both spring and fall, but you can find them in the river pretty much any time of year. Spring fishing, usually from March to May, is particularly popular when the steelhead are at their strongest after spending the winter in Lake Ontario.

Why Anglers Keep Coming Back

The Credit River is a hidden gem that keeps our clients coming back year after year. It's crazy to think you can have such great fishing so close to Toronto - we're talking world-class salmon and steelhead runs less than an hour from downtown. The river itself is gorgeous, with clear water flowing over gravel beds and through wooded areas. It's the kind of place where you can really disconnect from the city and feel like you're out in the wilderness. Plus, the chance to sight-fish for big salmon and steelhead is something that gets every angler's heart racing. There's nothing quite like watching a big fish move to take your fly or lure.

Top Catches This Season

This season has been killer so far on the Credit. We've been seeing some monster Chinooks, with a few pushing the 30-pound mark. The Coho run has been strong too, with lots of fish in the 8-12 pound range. As for steelhead, we had an awesome spring run with some of the biggest chrome-bright fish we've seen in years. Fall fishing is shaping up to be just as good. Just last week, one of our clients landed a 16-pound steelhead that took him halfway down the river before we could get it in the net. That's the kind of action you can expect on a good day on the Credit.

Time to Book Your Spot

If you're itching to get out on the water and tangle with some hard-fighting salmon and steelhead, this half-day trip on the Credit River is just the ticket. It's the perfect way to squeeze in some quality fishing without taking up your whole day. Our guides are some of the best in the business and will make sure you have a blast, whether you're a seasoned pro or it's your first time holding a rod. We provide all the gear, so all you need to bring is a good attitude and maybe a snack or two. Spots fill up fast, especially during peak salmon and steelhead runs, so don't wait to book your trip. Give us a call or hit that 'Book Now' button to lock in your date. Trust me, once you experience the Credit River, you'll be hooked for life!

Learn more about the species

Chinook Salmon

Chinook, or King salmon, are the heavyweights of the salmon world. These bruisers average 15-30 pounds but can top 50 in the right conditions. You'll find them cruising deep, cold waters near river mouths and along shorelines. Fall is prime time as they stage for their spawning run. Chinooks are prized for their hard-fighting spirit - be ready for screaming reels and acrobatic leaps. Their rich, orange flesh makes for some of the best eating around too. When targeting these big boys, go deep with flashy spoons or cut bait. A local trick: troll slower than you think you should, especially on sunny days. These kings like a lazy presentation. Keep your drag set light and be patient - when a chrome-bright Chinook hits, you'll know it!

Chinook Salmon

Coho Salmon

Coho, or silver salmon, are the acrobats of the salmon family. Typically running 8-12 pounds, these feisty fish put on an aerial show when hooked. Look for them in slower pools and along current seams as they prepare for their fall spawning run. Cohos are eager biters, making them a blast for anglers of all skill levels. Their orange-red flesh is top-notch for the grill or smoker too. Early mornings and evenings are your best bet, especially on sunny days. These silvers love to chase, so try retrieving your lure with short, quick jerks to trigger strikes. Here's a tip: if you see one follow but not bite, quickly change your retrieve speed. That sudden shift often seals the deal. Whether you're casting flies or spinning gear, coho offer non-stop action and tasty rewards.

Coho Salmon

Steelhead Trout

Steelhead are the sea-run cousins of rainbow trout, and they fight like their lives depend on it. These silver bullets typically run 5-15 pounds but can push 30 in some waters. You'll find them in faster runs and deeper pools as they move upriver to spawn. Fall and spring offer the best action as fresh fish enter the system. Steelhead are legendary for their strong runs and acrobatic leaps - be ready for an arm-wrenching battle. Their firm, pink flesh is excellent on the grill or smoker. These fish can be finicky, so presentation is key. Try drifting roe or swinging flies in likely holding water. Here's a local tip: when the water's high and off-color, go big and bright with your lures or flies. Steelhead fishing can be challenging, but landing one of these chrome-bright beauties is an angler's dream come true.
